The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi

Annual Council

Welcome

Dear Members of the Mississippi Diocesan Family:

On behalf of the parishes of Ascension and Trinity, we are pleased to invite you to the 182nd Annual Council of the Diocese of Mississippi.  Council will convene on Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, which sits prominently at the confluence of U.S. 49 and I-59 in Hattiesburg.  Registration begins at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Convention Center.  Registration forms and other information are included in the packet (and on this website).  The opening service of Evening Prayer begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening.  Clergy are asked to vest for this service.

We are delighted to welcome you back to our growing city.  Since the last time Council convened in Hattiesburg in 2004, there have been some substantial changes...prompted in part by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Our population has increased significantly, and not just thanks to Katrina but also, since Hattiesburg has been designated a premier retirement city, folks from all over are coming here for the climate and the ever-expanding facilities.  Lodging opportunities have increased, as have eating and shopping opportunities.  Indeed, a city that used to be thought of as a stop-off point for people traveling to and from the coast and New Orleans has now become a destination in and of itself.

We hope while you are here you will take time to visit some of our local attractions.  The University of Southern Mississippi campus has grown both in enrollment and facilities and the newly renovated stadium - The Rock - is a sight to behold.  Historic downtown Hattiesburg offers a delightful array of galleries, specialty shops, and restaurants.  There is, as well, a wonderful public library where you can find peace and quiet while visually learning the history of South Mississippi!

Make your plans now to attend Council '09.  Council is always a good time - the worship, the fellowship, the entertainment, and even the business sessions!  So come on down, but before you do, remember to register - delegates, spouses, visitors, friends, and exhibitors.

We look forward to seeing you in the Hub City in February!
