The Honduras Medical Mission originated in 1982 from a Sunday School class at St. John's, Pascagoula, led by Dr. Bob Donald and Gene Asbury. Administered by the diocese-of-mississippi, it partners with the Diocese of Honduras.
Key Milestones
- 1983–2007: Primary focus on San Joaquin (Santa Barbara). Relocated to Omoa in 2007 at the request of Bishop Lloyd Allen.
- 1998: Established a satellite clinic in Conception Del Norte (active through 2006/2007). Added dental, optometry (William Strickland), and veterinary care.
- Governance: Bishop Gray Jr. created the Diocesan Honduras Medical Mission Committee to oversee operations.
Community Projects in San Joaquin
- Infrastructure: Constructed a clinic, dormitory, kitchen, school facilities, water tanks, and helped bring electricity.
- Education & Care: Sponsored Kinder Mississippi (preschool/feeding program) and funded school supplies and transport to San Antonio.
- Partnerships: Collaborative effort with local Hondurans and student translators from St. John's (Puerto Cortes) and Buen Pastor (San Pedro Sula).
