Seattle provided a beautiful backdrop for the biennial gathering of Episcopal Deacons from all over the North American continent.
I, as the Assistant to the Bishop for the Diaconate, and Frank Spencer, Dean of the Deacons School, met with friends new and old and attended many workshops of importance to deacons. I presented a power point presentation of the work of ERD in Mississippi during one of these workshops. The highlight of the conference, in addition to renewing friendships, was the participation in our conference events by the Presiding Bishop, Katharine Jefferts-Schori.
Bishop Katharine challenged the deacons by reminding us that our ministry is one of urgency and encouraged deacons to be the face of Christ to the world in all areas of mission: 1. Proclamation, 2. Teaching, baptizing and nurturing new believers, 3. Service, 4. Transformation of unjust structures of society and 5. Safeguarding the integrity of creation. (Anglican Communion Website under 5 marks of mission) I was reminded once again why I feel so called to the order of deacons in our church at this time.
The deacons of the diocese of Olympia did a wonderful job of hosting this conference. The weather was gorgeous and the blooming flowers and luscious vegetables at Pike’s Place Market added to our enjoyment.
